چکیده

Ants solve complex and dynamic problems with virtually no formalized mechanisms to coordinate their work. Ants are known to divide the labour, such that highly specialized groups perform different tasks. This enhances colony efficiency. As a model for computing ants are good because they are simple, distributed, autonomous and yet solve complex tasks. In this thesis specific questions are addressed regarding how ants achieve division of labour, and how to achieve division of labour in distributed autonomous software agents. Multi-agent simulations has been performed, which enabled me to evolve complex behaviour for software agents that facilitated division of labour in both a transportation optimisation problem, and in a waste management optimisation problem. Swarm intelligence was used as a modelling method, and evolutionary algorithms were used to evolve controller logic for the agents.

Social Inhibition Manages Division of Labour in Artificial Swarm Systems

This paper presents a novel and bio-inspired algorithm for distributed division of labour in swarms of artificial agents (e.g., autonomous underwater vehicles). The algorithm is inspired by division of labour via local interactions in social insects. The algorithm is successfully implemented in virtual agents and simulated robot swarms and demonstrates a high adaptivity in response to changes i...

WASPS: A weight-allocated social pressure System for the emergence of agent specialization

Division of labour, or specialization, is common in many types of insect colonies. It emerges in some of these societies as a result of age polyethism, whereby the division of labour is tied to the age of the individuals. One known method that explains this is social inhibition. Individuals release pheromones when they interact with other agents. The strength of their pheromones is tied to thei...

A Bio-Inspired Architecture for Division of Labour in SANETs

Division of labour is one of the possible strategies to efficiently exploit the resources of autonomous systems. It is also a phenomenon often observed in animal systems. We show an architecture that implements division of labour in Sensor/Actuator Networks. The way the nodes take their decisions is inspired by ants’ foraging behaviour. The preliminary results show that the architecture and the...

Labour Information Utilization by Farmers in SW Nigeria

Farmers need up to date information on efficient use and management of labour for agricultural production. Yet, they lack adequate and needed information. Hence, this study was undertaken to explore the sources and use of labour information by farmers in southwestern Nigeria. Multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select respondents for the study. Primary data were collected to elicit infor...

Importance of plasticity and decision-making strategies for plant resource acquisition in spatio-temporally variable environments.

* Plants must cope with environmental variation in space and time. Phenotypic plasticity allows them to adjust their form and function to small-scale variations in habitat quality. Empirical studies have shown that stoloniferous plants can exploit heterogeneous habitats through plastic ramet specialization and internal resource exchange (division of labour). * Here we present a spatially explic...
